Sallust talks about Cato: esse quam videi bonus malebat; ita, quo minus petebat gloriam, eo magis illum adsequebatur (he desired to be good more than to seem good; in such a way, just as he did not seek glory, so it pursued him)
Today I got a letter from MINDEF telling me that I just committed an offense under the National Service act. Lol. Apparently I was supposed to inform them I was leaving the country when I left in Feb/March for my sojourn in the states. They even gave me the exact dates I was overseas! Very impressive: one thing I’m wondering though… why can’t they just hook up with the immigration authorities and save everyone so much trouble?
Today I also started voice lessons with Judith: she’s a great voice teacher, really makes me feel relaxed (even though apparently not). She says all my muscles get really tense when I sing! Lol. Sounds like my various organ, piano, and saxophone teachers. Apparently I am a very uptight person. Well… yes, I guess. I should probably go start yoga as well or tachi or something.
Friday I met up with Yap Xiong for dinner. It’s always a breath of fresh air to see/talk to him: he’s always so simple yet so profound yet so mind-dazzlingly non-conventional. And he’s always good to trigger a new wave and way of thinking, and to question old ones, even though there’s a lot I don’t agree with him over.
Me being the kiasu Singaporean that I am has already booked my Thanksgiving tickets! And the website kind of screwed up so my mileage number didn’t get put in, so I had to call the customer service today, which was really unhelpful. She was like making it sound like my fault! Bleh.
I need to find a church in Seattle to practice when I go over. Speaking of, I realize that I arrive in the middle of the OHS Seattle Convention! Gah! Why can’t they hold it one week later?
Kyrie eleison.
