The Lord has promised good to me, his word my hope secures. He will my shield and portion be, as long as life endures.

I was just driving along the other night after a conversation with a really good friend and I found myself tearing. And I was like: “why is she so nice to me? how do i deserve it? what do i have to offer in return?” It’s undeserved love: and I thank God that I am the recipient of so much undeserved (and often unrequited love) from friends and especially from my parents, and o yes, from God himself, so often under-appreciated.

What can I give him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd I would bring a lamb, If I were a wise man I would do my part, Yet what I can I give Him — Give my heart.

And time and time again I find myself brought to this humbling position: what can I bring back to give God, but not only God, but also my parents and also all these wonderful friends standing by me and supporting me? And I look at myself and I’m so selfish and so self-centered and I wonder: why would they love me? why should they love me?

That is the mystery of love.
